The Norwegian Army
Peacetime Force:
Approx. 19 500.
Force after mobilization:
Approx. 89 000.
Principal task:
- To execute the land part in anti-invasion defence activities in one part of
the country, for the time being North Norway
- survey the border to Russia
- maintain presence in the rest of the country for a possible defeat of small
forces contribute with one battalion to NATO's implementation forces
- participate in UN forces with up to 1 600 personell
- support the civilian society.
Organization:
Under the two regional subordinate commands Defence Command North Norway and
Defence Command South Norway, the Army has four regional commands (Land
Commands). The Land Commands have a total of 14 territorial regiments and
Division 6.

"The New Army" - wartime organization:
The restructuring of the old organization with its 13 infantry brigades is
basically as follows:
6. Division in North Norway, consisting of three brigades; Brigade 5,
Brigade 6 and the Brigade North. In addition
there will be established necessary divisional troops for
tactical and administrative support.
Brigade 15 (Brig 15) in the Ofoten area will be restructured to a mechanized
brigade. Brig 15 will, when necessary, be used to reinforce Div 6.
Brigade 12 (Brig 12) in Trøndelag will be restructured to a mechanized
brigade.
The Brigade South (Brig S) in East Norway will be restructured to an
armoured brigade.
Brig 15, Brig 12 and Brig S will be established as independent brigades and
equipped to be able to combat for a certain period. The remaining three brigades
will be "tactical Brigades" according to the kind of support functions
the division needs.
In addition to the division and the brigades the Army will have 22 infantry
battalions:
- four motorized battalions in Finnmark
- two fortification battalions in Troms
- 14 field battalions
- HM the Kings Guard
- Telemark Battalion.

*1) Garrison in Sør-Varanger (GSV) consists of staff, garrison
administration, one staff company, one border company (12 months
service at the border), one garrison company, one Home Guard company and one
communications unit.
*2) The Physical Training Company at Kolss is placed under the HMKG. Here
two troops per year, each consisting of about 70
persons, are going through a 6 months training programme.
*3) Telemark Battalion (TM bn) is part of NATO's Immediate Reaction Force
(IRF). TM bn may also be made available to UN
or OSCE. TM bn must be able to take part in peace-enforcing operations. Both
soldiers and officers have volunteered to serve in this special unit.

In addition to this materiel, the Army has small caliber weapons.
The Army has a large number of vehicles at its disposal, including Saab
Scania and M-621 lorries, BV 202 and BV 206 track vehicles, armoured transport
vehicle M-113, and Mercedes, Volvo and Landrover cross-country vehicles, Suzuki
offroad motorcycles, different types ski-scooters and Polaris 6x6 cross-country
vehicles.
