The Home Guard (HG)
Permanent peacetime force:
Approx. 500, including approx. 200 civilians.
Force after mobilization:
Approx. 83 000.
Principal tasks:
The Home Guards primary mission is to:
- secure the mobilization of the Armed Services, keep surveillance of the
local areas and support the operations of the Armed Services, including
inflicting on an invading enemy as much loss as possible;
- contribute to the prevention or limiting environmental
- disasters and other serious accidents;
- support the Armed Services and the Total Defence in peacetime, crisis and
war.
Organization:
The Home Guard consists of the Land Home Guard, the Naval Home Guard and the
Air Defence Artillery and Base Defence Home Guard.
The Land Home Guard
Approx. 77 000 officers/privates. It is divided into 89 Land HG sectors and
483 Land HG areas.
Its mission is mainly guard duty/securing important objects as mobilization
stores, power stations, telegraph installations etc. However, its mission is
also to keep surveillance/intelligence. All tasks are performed in the Home
Guard soldiers local areas where they know well the
surroundings. The units in the Land HG is equipped with machine guns,
anti-tank weapons and recoilless guns. In case of mobilization, the Land HG is
placed under the command of the territorial regiments of the Army.
The Naval Home Guard
Approx. 4 900 officers/privates. It is divided into 10 Naval HG sectors and
31 Naval HG areas. The Naval HG shall keep surveillance, identify, inspect and
report activities along the coast. The Naval HG mobilizes approx. 235 vessels,
77 speed boats and 74 coastal reporting stations. The Naval HG is equipped with
12.7 mm heavy machine guns.
The Air Home Guard (Air HG)
pprox. 1 000 officers/privates. It is divided into 1 Air HG battalion and 1 independent Air HG battery. The Air HG bases shall perform close defence against aircrafts, and keep watch/securing, anti-NBC and military police service. The Air HG is equipped with 20 mm anti-aircraft guns and 12.7 mm heavy machine guns. During 1999 and 2000, the Air HG will be reorganized to perform base defence tasks only. The number of units will be increased to cover all the air bases and some air command and control stations. In case of mobilization, the Air HG is placed under the command of its air stations.
