The Royal Norwegian Navy

Peacetime Force:

Approx. 8 200.

Force after mobilization:

Approx. 22 000.

Main tasks:

  • Surveillance and control of inshore waters, and of close and remote areas
  • Exercise of sovereignty
  • Coast Guard and coast administration
  • Sea-invasion defence
  • Keeping the sealines of communications open
  • Participate in international naval forces under NATO/UN in peacetime and during international crises.

Organization:

The Commanders of the Armed Forces South Norway and North Norway exercise their operative command of the vessels of the Navy, the Coastal Artillery forts and the Coast Guard vessels in their respective areas.

Principal tasks:

The Royal Norwegian Navy consists of the Navy, the Coast Guard and the Coastal Artillery.

Naval vessels participate in all main tasks of the Navy, both in peacetime, crisis and war.

The main task of the Coastal Artillery is to block fjords leading to strategic towns and harbours. This is the reason why Coastal Artillery forts are placed at the mouths of such fjords. In addition, the Coastal Artillery is an important element in the defence of areas important or crucial to our general defence capability. The Coastal Artillery will also provide support for army operations if possible.

The main tasks of the Coast Guard are:

  • General surveillance and control on the continental shelf, in Norways Economic Zone and in the Fisheries Zone around Svalbard and Jan Mayen.
  • Enforcement of the provisions concerning fisheries limits and trawl-free zones.
  • Support to Norwegian fishermen, including weather ships and installations and participation in rescue operations.
  • Participation in oil pollution control emergency services, surveillance of the pollution situation and assistance in the event of environmental disasters at sea.
  • General support to other governmental institutions.
  • Military assignments in the event of an emergency.
