Agreement at the climate summit

'This is a historic day, eight years after the Paris Agreement', says Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide has been closely involved in the negotiations at the climate summit and is pleased that the countries finally reached agreement on the text.

‘We are making history today. It is the first time the world has agreed on such a clear text on the need to move away from fossil fuels. It has been the elephant in the room, and now we are finally addressing it. This is the result of a huge number of conversations and intense diplomacy,’ says Eide.

‘Never before have we been so honest at a global political level in terms of connecting the insights from science to the necessary actions we need to take. And it's good that it refers to a transition, as it points to the fact that what we need to do is to phase in new energy production, distribution and use in parallel with the transition from the fossil age,’ says Eide.

‘We are proving that multilateralism delivers results, even on the most challenging issues, and in an otherwise troubled time,’ says Eide.
