‘Norway strongly condemns North Korea's missile launch on 24 March. This is a clear violation of several Security Council resolutions, and threatens regional and international security’, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Anniken Huitfeldt.

North Korean authorities have announced that they launched a new type intercontinental ballistic missile on 24 March. Norway is deeply concerned about the consequences this may have for regional and international security.

‘I urge North Korea to refrain from illegal and irresponsible weapons testing. The North Korean authorities have a special responsibility to resume political dialogue as soon as possible.

The launch is in violation of several UN Security Council resolutions, as well as a united international community that has called for North Korea to abandon its illegal weapons programmes. The launch of an intercontinental missile is a further escalation from North Korea.

The UN Security Council will meet 25 March to discuss the issue. Norway will condemn North Korea's actions in violation of international law. The Security Council will also consider a resolution renewing the mandate of the Panel of Experts that supports the North Korea Sanctions Committee, chaired by Norway.
