'Despite the ceasefire, the Lebanese population finds itself in a highly vulnerable situation. Many people are still internally displaced, and there is significant material destruction. This is why Norway has decided to increase the support to Lebanon,' said Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide
The Norwegian government will provide an additional NOK 40 million (USD 3.5 million) making the total Norwegian contribution to Lebanon in 2024 NOK 410 million (USD 36 million). The support will fund aid for refugees and marginalized Lebanese citizens, including internally displaced persons. There is an urgent need for additional assistance and to rebuild the essential infrastructure. NOK 30 million will go to a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) livelihoods and social services project to support the Lebanese Armed Forces service members and their families, who have been profoundly affected by the crises. In addition, NOK 10 million will be provided to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s work in Lebanon and Syria.
‘The ceasefire is an important first step to make it possible for displaced people to return to their homes, to restore calm and to re-build. The situation is still volatile, and I urge the parties to respect the ceasefire agreement and implement the UN Security Council Resolution 1701,’ said Foreign Minister Eide.
