Norwegian Prime Minister meets family of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi

Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian human rights defender, was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her unwavering fight against the oppression of Iranian women and her efforts to promote human rights and freedom for everyone.

‘At our meeting today, I congratulated Narges Mohammadi’s family on the award of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to Ms Mohammadi. The family will be receiving the prize on behalf of Ms Mohammadi, who is being held in Evin prison in Iran. The prize has been awarded for her untiring efforts to strengthen the position of women and promote human rights and freedom. This year’s award provides recognition of the important role human rights defenders play in promoting peace and democracy,’ said Mr Støre.

Ms Mohammadi has been arrested and imprisoned repeatedly, most recently in 2022, and she has been sentenced to flogging and a total of more than 30 years in prison. She has also been held in isolation for prolonged periods.

‘We view the oppression of women in many countries, including Iran, as a clear and serious breach of international obligations. I hope that this year’s Nobel Peace Prize will inspire women and men around the world who are working for peace and democracy in difficult circumstances. Norway has raised the issue of Ms Mohammadi’s case and similar cases with Iran on many occasions and over a number of years, including the conditions under which prisoners are held. I myself have taken up the situation for women human rights defenders,’ said Mr Støre.
