China is an important market for Norwegian seafood. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre attended an event where Chinese consumers had the chance to taste high-quality Norwegian seafood.
‘The people of China appreciate good fish and seafood. China is Norway’s second most important market for Norwegian seafood after the EU. It was wonderful to see how much the Chinese customers enjoyed the seafood that was being served,’ said Prime Minister Støre.
The Hema Fresh supermarket chain offers fresh produce, meat and seafood from around the world. Together with the Norwegian Seafood Council’s representative in China, Mr Støre served Norwegian salmon and seafood to Chinese food shoppers in Shanghai.
Last year Norwegian companies exported 160 000 tonnes of seafood to China, primarily salmon, mackerel and whitefish. In terms of volume of Norwegian seafood exports, the Chinese market is second only to the EU.
‘We are working with the Chinese authorities to ensure reliable market access for Norwegian seafood companies,’ said Prime Minister Støre.
