‘Norway is concerned by the developments in Guatemala following last week’s elections. Like other international partners we encourage the Guatemalan authorities to respect the popular vote and the democratic will of the Guatemalan people, as was freely and clearly expressed in the elections on 25 June’, says Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt.
As international observation missions, including from the European Union (EU) and the Organization of American States (OAS) have stated, the published results corresponded with the results that were observed in the election districts throughout the country.
The Guatemalan election authorities (TSE) organized the elections in an orderly manner and no major irregularities were recorded by national and international observers.
‘Norway stands by its historic commitment to support the Guatemalan people’s right to a democratic and peaceful future. We trust that a second election round will be carried out as planned on 20 August’, says Huitfeldt.
