The Norwegian Labour and Welfare Service (Nav) aims to create an inclusive society, an inclusive labour market, and a well-functioning job market.
The Labour and Welfare Service is responsible for addressing the needs of disadvantaged groups and combating poverty, including by promoting employment and participation. Nav also ensures income security in cases of unemployment, pregnancy and childbirth, single parenthood, illness and injury, disability, old age, and death.
The Directorate of Labour and Welfare
The Directorate of Labour and Welfare has the overarching responsibility to ensure that the Labour and Welfare Administration meets the expectations set for the Labour and Welfare Service and achieves the goals and results outlined in the ministry’s mandate.
The directorate is responsible for the overall governance, management, and development of the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Service (Nav), including:
- Following up in line with performance requirements, management model, and core values
- Legal and mandated responsibilities that must be safeguarded
- Strategy and organizational development
- Development of professional and work methodologies
Managing one-third of the state budget
Nav serves 2.8 million users annually and manages approximately one-third of the state budget. In annual allocation letters to the Directorate of Labour and Welfare, the ministry provides the framework and guidelines for the agency’s operations for the current year.
