The Maritime Pension Fund

The Maritime Pension Fund (MPK) administers a mandatory pension scheme for employees on Norwegian-registered ships and certain mobile installations.

The pension scheme provides pension for employees aged between 60 and 67, based on accrued service time for employees who were 50 years or older when the Act on Pension Scheme for Employees at Sea entered into force on 1 January 2020. Other employees accrue pension rights based on income. The pension for this group can be paid from when the employee turns  62 until the age of  80, but not for a period shorter than seven years.

The pension schemes are continuously financed by the employees and employers, as well as a smaller statutory contribution from the state. The scheme is state-guaranteed, but the main principle is that it should be self-financed by employees and employers covering the pension costs. MPK has a board of five members consisting of representatives from the industry’s employee and employer’s organizations, as well as a chair appointed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion (AID). MPK has 22 employees and is located in Oslo.
