The Department of Integration

The Department of Integration is responsible for policies and measures that aims to to increase labour participation and participation in society in general. The department is also responsible for coordinating integration policy across sectors.

The department has a special responsibility for the settlement of refugees, grants to municipalities for integration work, the Integration Act which covers training in Norwegian and social studies, and the introduction program for newly arrived adult immigrants, as well as the qualification initiative Jobbsjansen. Furthermore, the department is responsible for the Citizenship Act, the Interpreter Act, and the facilitation of interpreting to and from spoken languages in the public sector.

The department also provides funding for integration work organized by voluntary organizations. Work on preventing negative social control and honor-related violence, as well as racism, discrimination, and extremism, is also part of the integration authorities' work.

The Integration Department is also responsible for coordinating integration policies across sectors.

The department is responsible for the administrative and professional management of the Directorate of Integration and Diversity (IMDi), which implements integration policies within the ministry's area of responsibility. The department also has professional management of the pedagogical work with training in Norwegian and social studies in HK-dir, for the processing of citizenship cases under the Citizenship Act in the Directorate of Immigration, and for work on negative social control in Bufdir.

The department has three sections:

Section for Labor Market Integration and Legal Affairs

This section is responsible for the legal instruments in the field of integration and labor market integration, including the Integration Act, the Citizenship Act, the Interpreter Act, the qualification of adult immigrants, security and emergency preparedness, and cross-cutting legal tasks.

Section for Budget and Settlement

This section is responsible for the economic instruments in integration policy, the state budget, agency management, digitalization, the settlement of refugees, grants to municipalities and voluntary organizations, resettlement refugees, and volunteerism.

Section for Analysis and Diversity

This section is responsible for work against negative social control, diversity, racism and discrimination, extremism, equitable public services, research and development, and international tasks.
