The activities of the Norwegian Tax Administration lay the principal financial foundations for government operations. The Norwegian Tax Administration shall ensure that taxes and other claims are correctly assessed and paid, and that the National Registry is up to date, whilst also providing good service.
The main duties of the Norwegian Tax Administration are collection of advance tax, checking of the basis underpinning the returns filed by taxpayers and third parties, assessment and checking of employees’ social security contributions and net wealth tax, assessment and collection of value added tax and excise duties, checking and supervision of the collection of direct taxes and employers’ social security contributions by municipal tax collectors, as well as management of the National Registry.
The Norwegian National Collection Agency was integrated into the Tax Administration with effect from 1 January 2015. On 1 January 2016, responsibility for the management of excise duties for registered taxpayers, as well as the collection of excise duties, customs duties and import value added tax, was reassigned from Norwegian Customs to the Norwegian Tax Administration. From 1 January 2017, administrative responsibility for import value added tax and excise duties for unregistered taxpayers was also reassigned to the Norwegian Tax Administration.
The Norwegian Tax Administration has 7,046 employees as at the end of 2022.
