Mr. President,
Meeting here today, our mission should be:
To pledge that we will never again allow the Balkans to become a source of conflict, ethnic hatred and war.
Let the tragedy in Kosovo be the last. Let this Summit in Sarajevo be a symbol for the new century.
This is what we must do:
One: We need to learn from history, to make up for past injustice. Two: We must build on shared values, on respect for each other, basic freedoms and human rights. Three: Our effort must be long-term and sustained. Four: We must be concrete and generous in our assistance. Five: We must include all, also the Serbian people, in democratic and economic development.
Mr. President,
Norway will remain engaged. We are ready to become a full partner and participant in the work of the Stability Pact. As in the past, Norway will provide finance and personnel to the humanitarian, peacekeeping and re-building efforts.
The ultimate responsibility lies with the leaders of this region.
Together we will succeed.
Thank you
