Minister of Fisheries Svein Ludvigsen:

Consumers must be guaranteed correct and relevant information about the importance of seafood for public health

”It is important that the seafood-producing nations work together counteract misleading and inaccurate information about foreign substances in seafood,” said Minister of Fisheries, Svein Ludvigsen in his speech to the North Atlantic Fisheries Ministers Conference.

”The reason of my concern is a study published in January in the American periodical, Science, which concluded that the consumption of salmon should be limited to two meals a month, despite the fact that the proven levels of PCBs and dioxins were well under the limiting values recommended by both the EU and the WHO (The World Health Organisation),” says Ludvigsen.

The Minister of Fisheries put particular emphasis on the fact the seafood-producing nations must cooperate to guarantee consumers correct and relevant information about the importance of seafood for public health, both with regard to food safety and positive health benefits. Fish, both farmed and wild, have their natural place in a well-balanced diet.

”I have invited the salmon producing nations to a round table conference in Stavanger on 23 June in connection with the aquaculture business conference, AquaVision, in order to discuss a closer collaboration in these areas of concern,” says the Minister of Fisheries.

Minister of Fisheries, Svein Ludvigsen, is attending the 9 th> North Atlantic Fisheries Ministers Conference, which is being held in Iceland on 3-4 June. In addition to Norway and Iceland, Russia, Canada, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and the EU Commission are also attending.
