Agreement reached on defence funding –
Armed forces to get NOK 118 billion over four years
- This is an auspicious day for Norwegian Defence. The agreement reached between the Government parties and the Labour Party means that a firm framework can, for the first time, be set for the funding of Norway’s defence for a number of years to come, and that consequently there is now a sound basis on which to achieve the necessary balance between the tasks assigned to the Armed Forces and the funding allocated.
This is the essence of the statement issued by Defence Minister Kristin Krohn Devold in the wake of the Parliamentary Defence Committee’s report on Proposition to the Storting No. 55 (2001-2002).
"The key aspects of the report are the framework for future funding and the long-term perspective. We are achieving our objective of creating a well integrated approach to defence planning and we are ensuring a stable and predictable level of funding for the demanding process of restructuring that the defence organisation is now undergoing. Defence funding of NOK 118 billion over the coming four years represents a historically high level and I believe that this will not be lost on our allies. It is also important to note that as much as one third of the money allocated will be invested in modernisation and that this is in line with the NATO aim to shift the balance of defence spending from operating costs to investment," says Krohn Devold.
This agreement also means that the Ministry of Defence and the top echelons of the Armed Forces will be integrated to form a new strategic leadership.
