Dates set for first round of Sri Lanka peace talks in Thailand
At the request of the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the Government of Norway is pleased to announce the dates for the first round of the formal peace negotiations in Thailand. In consultation with the Thai and Norwegian authorities, the parties have decided to hold the first round of talks on September 16 -18, 2002. The Norwegian Government will announce the venue for the negotiations and provide information on press access closer to the time of the talks.
"With this step the parties continue on their long road towards peace. There is no reason to conceal that there are considerable difficulties ahead, but there is also a determination on both sides to seek a lasting political settlement of the ethnic conflict," said Norwegian State Secretary Vidar Helgesen.
