Norwegian contribution to UNESCO’s efforts to safeguard Iraq’s cultural heritage
At a UNESCO meeting in Paris today on safeguarding Iraq’s cultural heritage, it was announced that Norway will contribute with NOK 500 000 to the efforts that's being made by the organisation during the current year to protect cultural sites in Iraq.
UNESCO is responsible for following up the provisions of UN Security Council resolution 1483 concerning Iraq’s cultural heritage. Some of Iraq’s cultural treasures have been looted, which will have terrible consequences not only for Iraq’s national heritage, but also for the cultural legacy shared by all humanity.
Norway is actively supporting UNESCO’s work in this area because it is an important and necessary component of the overall international effort to ensure stability and harmonious development in Iraq.
