Norway responds to UN appeal by contributing additional NOK 50 million to the relief efforts following the tsunamis in South East Asia

This morning the UN launched an initial appeal to the international community for USD 130 million for the emergency relief efforts in South East Asia. Minister of International Development Hilde F. Johnson has therefore decided to allocate an additional NOK 50 million for humanitarian aid to the affected areas.

This new contribution will be used primarily to support UN relief efforts. Some of the funds will go to UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP), and the rest will be distributed in consultation with the UN.

This brings Norway’s total contribution to the relief efforts up to NOK 100 million.

“Given the scale of this disaster, Norway and other donor countries will have to continually assess the need for further assistance,” said the Minister.
