Meetings between key representatives of Haitian political parties and civil society were held in Norway on 23-30 August. The talks were a continuation of the process of national dialogue on peaceful development and democratisation in Haiti. The main topic of discussion was the role of the political parties in the elections planned for 2005. The Haitian representatives met politicians from several Norwegian parties. The participants also discussed experience from the peace and reconciliation process in Guatemala. The talks were constructive and concluded in a joint declaration in which each of the participants undertakes to work towards dialogue and compromise in Haiti.

“The signing of a joint declaration of intent is a step on the way towards democracy. Now all the parties will have to follow up the declaration back in Haiti,” said State Secretary, Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen.
