Norwegian ambassador in Nepal called home for consultations
In the light of the recent developments in Nepal, Norway’s ambassador, Tore Toreng, was called home today for consultations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is part of a co-ordinated move by like-minded countries.
On 3 February Norway aligned itself with the EU declaration criticising King Gyanendra’s dissolution of the government and expressing support for a multiparty democracy and constitutional monarchy, and concern about the human rights violations in the country. Foreign Minister Jan Petersen has said that the dissolution of the government is a serious setback for democracy.
In meetings with members of the new government, the Norwegian ambassador has expressed Norway’s grave concern over the situation. Norway is following developments in Nepal closely and will assess the situation and the consequences it will have for development co-operation in close co-operation with other donor countries.
