The EU opens membership negotiations with Turkey
“I am very pleased that the EU and Turkey have opened negotiations on Turkish membership,” said Foreign Minister Jan Petersen. “This will help to ensure stability and democratic development in the region.”
The Government is positive to EU enlargement, which will help to promote economic development, cohesion and stability throughout Europe.
“Turkish membership will help to bridge old historical, cultural and religious divides in Europe,” said the Foreign Minister.
The EU has established a number of political and economic criteria that must be met by new member states.
“The negotiating process will help to promote democratic development and respect for human rights in Turkey,” said Mr Petersen.
The membership negotiations are expected to take many years. If and when Turkey joins the EU, it will also be part of the EEA.
