Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik
Speech at Luncheon for President Bill Clinton
Bjørnsgard gård, 4 November 2003
Dear President Clinton,
Ladies and gentlemen,
It’s always a pleasure to welcome dear friends to Norway.
The United States is Norway’s most important ally, and there are long-lasting and close ties between our two nations.
I have fond memories from the excellent co-operation we had during your presidency, and I look forward to work together with you also in your new capacity. Our discussion earlier today proved that we share many common goals.
Solidarity with the poor and oppressed has been – and will continue to be – a life-long commitment for me.
I deeply appreciate your dedication to the work for the victims of HIV and AIDS. We look forward to work with you and your foundation to fight this epidemic, especially in Tanzania and Mozambique!
The fight against HIV and AIDS is a global challenge. We take part in these efforts to defend the life and dignity of fellow human beings in many countries of the world.
We, living inn the privileged nations of the world, have a moral duty to assist the poor nations in this fight. We both do so because we share fundamental values.
The world needs the dedication of distinguished personalities and political leaders to mobilize support in this battle - to help the victims and to fight HIV and AIDS. That’s exactly what you do, Bill, and you should know that we warmly appreciate your commitment and we will support you. As an experienced statesman you are able to give a great contribution to a noble cause.
Dear Bill, let me welcome you and your delegation to this informal luncheon here at Bjørnsgaard.
I hope you will enjoy the environment we are in and the food.
Please join me in a toast to the future cooperation between the Clinton-foundation and Norway in the fight against HIV/AIDS!
