The Norwegian Government demands that Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratic rights are respected and that members of the opposition party NLD are permitted to carry on legal political activity. The Government is deeply concerned about the safety of Aung San Suu Kyi and her colleagues. We have contacted other countries to discuss how we can put additional pressure on the military junta.

On Saturday 2 September, Burma’s military regime "escorted" Aung San Suu Kyi back to Rangoon and broke into the offices of the opposition party. Several party members are under arrest and Aung San Suu Kyi is being subjected to house arrest in her home, and is not being allowed any contact with colleagues or the diplomatic community in Rangoon.

Norway condemns the actions of the military junta and requests the junta to enter into a dialogue with the opposition.
