A unique peace prize to a unique organization and a unique Man

Minister of International Development Anne Kristin Sydnes congratulated the United Nations and its Secretary-General Kofi Annan on a well-deserved Nobel Peace Prize.

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee could not have chosen more deserving peace laureates than the UN and Secretary-General Kofi Annan," said Ms Sydnes. "If there is anything the world needs right now, it is a strong world organization with a strong and courageous leader. The world community needs the unifying force that the UN and Mr. Annan represent.

"Kofi Annan has devoted his life to the UN. As Secretary-General he has managed to make the most of the organization’s modest resources. The UN has never been so well equipped to work for peace, security and the eradication of poverty. This is due not least to the dedicated reform efforts of its Secretary-General," said the Minister. "Norway and the other Nordic countries have for many years supported the efforts for UN reform, not least in the economic and social fields. Here Kofi Annan has delivered the goods.

"Mr. Annan has done much to establish joint international goals for the fight against poverty," continued the Minister. "I would also like to commend his forceful leadership in the efforts to combat the HIV/AIDS pandemic. He has gone ahead and shown the way forward.

"It is important that we support Kofi Annan’s leadership. This is therefore an occasion for rejoicing," said Ms. Sydnes.
