Norwegian Minister challenges OECD: Must enhance global food security

- Trade is important, but trade alone cannot solve the fundamental challenges regarding increasing world hunger. Trade can have positive effects, but can also be a threat to national food security and other multifunctional roles of national agricultural production. It is important both to strengthen national food production, and to increase agriculture related development aid. This must be reflected in the OECDs work and priorities, says the Norwegian Minister of Agriculture and Food Lars Peder Brekk.
Today, the Norwegian Minister of Agriculture and Food mr Lars Peder Brekk gives an address at the OECD Agricultural Ministerial Meeting in Paris.
Three major challenges
- Climate change is one of the most challenging issues for the world’s agriculture in the coming decades. We face three major challenges: We need to reduce emissions, we must preserve and protect agricultural land, and we have to caretake soil and forests as a carbon sink. At the same time, we need to increase sustainable food production. Agriculture is a part of the solution. OECD should prioritize this work in the future, says Minister Brekk.
