The 40th session of the Joint Norwegian-Russian Fisheries Commission will sit in Kaliningrad between 10 and 15 October 2011. The Commission works to ensure sustainable management and harvest of cod, haddock, capelin and Greenland halibut, which Norway and Russia manage jointly in the Barents Sea.

“The Norwegian-Russian fisheries collaboration is crucial to the sustainable management of fish stocks in the Barents Sea. Among other things, the Commission establishes quotas for our joint stocks which are the basis of a fishing industry with a firsthand value of almost NOK 10 billion. Moreover, proactive initiatives taken by the Commission and the authorities of the two countries have helped us to put a stop to illegal and unreported fishing of cod and haddock in the Barents Sea,” says Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, Lisbeth Berg-Hansen.

“At the moment stocks in the Barents Sea are at an all time high. This is an excellent point of departure for this year’s meeting and illustrates how crucial it is to have stable management regimes and trustful cooperation,” the Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs says in conclusion.

Permanent undersecretary Jørn Krog will lead negotiations and the Norwegian delegation.
