During Monday’s debate in the UN General Assembly on disarmament and international security, Norway called for a new concerted effort to reduce the nuclear dangers facing the world. All countries share a responsibility to join in this effort by participating in regimes aimed at further reducing nuclear arsenals and preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
Norway will continue to be actively engaged in efforts in this area, for example by playing a leading role in the cross-regional Seven-nation Initiative. The other six partner countries are Australia, Chile, Indonesia, Romania, South Africa and the UK. It is now essential to create international consensus on the way forward towards nuclear disarmament. The Seven-nation Initiative shows that this is possible.
Norway also stressed that the international community must intensify its efforts to reduce the humanitarian suffering caused by certain conventional weapons.
