The aim of the conference is to explore how states can contribute to achieving the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons.

Since September 2005, Norway has headed the Seven-Nation Initiative on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, aimed at further reducing the number of nuclear weapons and strengthening international efforts to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The conference in Oslo will be one of this year’s important events in this field. Its aim is to explore how all states – nuclear-weapon states and non-nuclear-weapon states alike – can contribute to achieving the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons.

The conference will focus on identifying strategies that promote sustainable solutions for disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. The participants will discuss, among other issues, what nuclear-weapon states and non-nuclear-weapon states can do to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in national security policies, how regional conflicts impact efforts to reduce nuclear dangers, the role of treaties, and ways of reconciling nuclear energy expansion with non-proliferation efforts.
