Minister of International Development to visit the earthquake zone in Pakistan
Minister of International Development Erik Solheim will visit Pakistan from 26 to 28 October to gain a first-hand impression of the effects of the earthquake that hit South Asia on 8 October.During his visit, Mr Solheim will discuss the relief efforts with the Pakistani authorities and the aid organisations.
The destruction caused by the South Asian earthquake has been greatest in Pakistan. The estimated number of deaths in the country is now 47 000, and the number of injured more than 60 000. These figures are expected to rise as rescue teams reach the most inaccessible areas.
The International Development Minister wishes to take a closer look at the Norwegian and international efforts to help the earthquake victims. A field visit to the affected areas will be arranged.
Norway has so far allocated NOK 53 million for the emergency relief efforts in Pakistan. Subject to the approval by the Storting of an additional allocation of NOK 300 million for natural disaster relief, more funds will shortly be made available to support the efforts of various aid organisations in Pakistan.
