Afghanistan. Joint statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre and Minister of Defence Anne-Grete Strøm-Erichsen
- Norway is not increasing its military contribution to ISAF with special forces at the present time. Norway will however increase project-related assistance to Afghanistan, and seek to ensure that some of the funds are used to achieve rapid, visible results for Afghans. Norway will work to ensure the strengthening and coordination of the international civilian effort in Afghanistan.
- Norway is focusing its military participation on the north of Afghanistan, but could in principle participate with troops in any part of ISAF’s area of responsibility. Similarly, there is no limitation on the type of contribution Norway can make, including special forces. Norwegian contributions will be based on an overall assessment of needs and capacity, and the obligations Norway has assumed in relation to other ongoing international operations and a possible future UN operation in Sudan/Darfur.
- The question of changes to the Norwegian troop contribution will be reviewed on a regular basis by the Ministers of Defence and Foreign Affairs, who will take up the matter with the Government when they consider it necessary.
