Foreign Affairs Minister congratulates Iraq on its new government
“I am pleased that Iraq’s national assembly has today approved a new government of national unity. The Iraqi people deserve a broad and inclusive government that can tackle all of the difficult challenges the country currently faces,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre.
“The serious security situation can only be improved if the Iraqi authorities are representative of and supported by the people. Hopefully, the national assembly’s approval of the government of national unity will contribute to this,” said Mr Støre.
“Building democracy takes time, and Iraq has a long way to go. However, elections have taken place, and the establishment of a government is a crucial first step.”
“An improved security situation is essential to achieving the aim of a unified and stable Iraq. Norway will continue to support the effort to democratise and rebuild Iraq,” said Mr Støre.
