Norway positive to US offer of direct talks with Iran
“The Government is pleased to note the announcement by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that the US is ready for direct talks with Iran on the country’s nuclear programme. The US has now shifted its position significantly in order to help find a solution. Now it is important that Iran should respond positively to the US overture,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
“Norway will continue its contact with Iran and like-minded countries. All efforts must now be focused on finding a negotiated solution. Iran must comply with the international community’s demands. The cohesion of the Security Council must be preserved, and contact with Iran must be maintained,” said Mr Støre. “Iran cannot continue to disregard the demands put forward by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Security Council to suspend the enrichment of uranium. The Iranian leadership has a great responsibility in this respect.”
“The EU will continue to play a key role. The package of incentives tabled by the EU is an important move. It allows Iran to continue developing nuclear power for peaceful purposes and offers new economic advantages. With the US on board, the package could also safeguard Iran’s security needs. I believe this is vital for finding a solution,” said the Foreign Minister.
