Norway recognises Montenegro as a sovereign state
Today the King in Council recognised Montenegro as a sovereign state.
- Europe has gained a new state in an area that has previously been marred by conflict, but which is now slowly becoming part of a stable Europe. The Montenegrin people expressed their clear wish in the referendum on 21 May, and the authorities now have a great responsibility to ensure clear and stable progress for Montenegro and the region, said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
This means that Norway has recognised all six former constituent republics of Yugoslavia as sovereign states. Norway recognised Slovenia and Croatia on 15 January 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina on 7 April 1992, and formally recognised Macedonia through the UN resolution of 8 April 1993.
Norway has over a number of years been engaged in project cooperation with Montenegro, and will this year provide NOK 30 million (nearly USD 5 million) for measures in the fields of electricity, tourism, institution-building and crime prevention, and for measures that benefit women and children.
