The Government is channelling NOK 2 million for emergency relief in Lebanon through Norwegian People’s Aid and the Norwegian Aid Committee (NORWAC), which focuses mainly with health care issues. “It is important that emergency relief reaches those in need quickly. That is why Norway is providing these funds now,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

The fighting between Fatah al Islam and the Lebanese Army has created a serious humanitarian situation for the Palestinian refugees in the Nahr al Bared camp and for those who have been forced to flee the camp. Schools and other public buildings are being used as temporary shelter. There is an urgent need to provide these people with basic necessities.

“Norway is very concerned about the situation in northern Lebanon and will follow further developments closely. We urge the parties to do their utmost to avoid harming the civilian population,” the Foreign Minister added.

Norwegian People’s Aid and NORWAC have been present in Lebanon for several decades and have extensive networks developed through cooperation with local organisations. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) will issue an appeal for emergency relief in the next few days and has welcomed the immediate Norwegian assistance.
