Norway to provide NOK 12 million in emergency assistance to Mozambique and Madagascar

Norway is providing NOK 7 million (USD 1,1 million) in emergency assistance to Mozambique in response to several weeks of flooding and a cyclone that has made an estimated 40 000 people homeless. The funds will be channelled through the Norwegian Red Cross. The planned measures include setting up a health clinic. 

- The situation regarding the flooding in Mozambique remains serious and difficult to assess. The recent cyclone has caused additional hardship, and further cyclones are expected. We want to support the efforts of the Norwegian Red Cross, including its plan to set up a health clinic in the area affected by the cyclone, said Minister of International Development Erik Solheim. 

Norway is also providing NOK 5 million (USD 800 000) in emergency assistance to Madagascar in connection with the three cyclones that have hit the country since December last year. The cyclones have caused flooding and severe damage to rice crops, and around 8 000 people have been made homeless. Norway will channel its support through the World Food Programme. 

- Madagascar has been hit hard by cyclones in recent months. They have caused severe physical damage, and thousands of people have been made homeless. Floodwater has destroyed large parts of the rice crop, which has resulted in serious food shortages. We want to support the efforts of the World Food Programme to distribute food to those who have been made homeless, said Mr Solheim
