Today the Norwegian Government pledged NOK 30 million (USD 5 Million) over a period of three years to the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership. The money will be used to increase the use of clean energy in poor countries. Specific projects include water pumps run on solar power technology and insulation of homes in poor areas.
- Energy is a scarce resource, it is important to help poor countries to utilise the little energy they have even better. If we can help these countries to harness environmentally sound, renewable forms of energy, we will be doing a service to the whole world, said Minister of International Development Erik Solheim.
The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) is an international alliance of governments, NGOs and businesses that promotes renewable energy and energy efficient technology. REEP focuses on reducing carbon emissions, improving energy security and ensuring access to clean energy. It has clear linkages with Norway’s action plan for environment in development. The REEEP is particularly active in China, Brazil, India and South Africa.
- Today, some 1.5 billion people do not have access to electricity. The lack of affordable energy is hindering development in poor countries. The development of renewable energy reduces poverty and helps to prevent climate change, added Mr Solheim.
