During the launch of the Government’s new China strategy on Tuesday 14 August, Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced that Norway will open a new consulate general in Guangzhou in southern China.
“We are moving further into mainland China. This will give us a foothold in southern China, and a presence that will make it easier to help Norwegians who have an interest in this area. There are huge opportunities in the south of mainland China, such as tourism and the export of fish. Both consumption and capacity are growing,” said Mr Støre.
“I believe that a new consulate general should be new in more than one sense of the word. It must work in a new, more modern way, and act as a lookout post towards the hinterland.
“Increased diplomatic presence in China is an important tool in the new China strategy. We already have two missions, but in a country such as this, where developments are so rapid, it is important to constantly consider whether we are present where our interests really are.
“In addition, we are increasing our staff in China, both at the embassy in Beijing and at the consulate general in Shanghai, and we will consider a further increase on an on-going basis with a view to meeting our needs. There is room for a stronger presence in China. We have been building this up over time, and we will continue to do so,” said Mr Støre.
