Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre and Vice-Chairman (at Minister level) of the National Development and Reform Commission Xie Zhenhua signed a Framework Agreement on Cooperation and Dialogue on Climate Change between Norway and China in Beijing today. Referring to the long-standing environmental cooperation between the two countries, Vide-Chairman Xie expressed strong interest in closer bilateral environmental cooperation with Norway.
“It is impossible to deal with the problem of global climate change without China’s cooperation. This agreement will give the two countries a platform for closer cooperation on climate change. At the same time is shows that China is interested in what Norway can contribute. The agreement covers areas such as the purchase of emission units, carbon capture and storage, renewable energy and adaptation to climate change. Furthermore, a bilateral dialogue on the global challenges posed by climate change will be set up under the agreement,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
In Norway, work will be coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and headed by Special Adviser on Energy and Climate Issues Bjørn Tore Godal. Other relevant ministries will also be actively involved and will be responsible for providing the scientific input. The first meeting under the agreement has been planned for later this year.
“Although the agreement has been concluded between the Norwegian and Chinese authorities, we consider it important to involve the Norwegian business and research communities,” Mr Støre added.
During his visit, the Foreign Minister will open a symposium on climate change. The symposium will explore topics related to climate change in the Arctic and the polar research conducted at the Chinese research station in Ny-Ålesund.
