Norway provides assistance to China following earthquake

Norway is providing NOK 2 million to China following the earthquake on 14 April. The money is to go to the Chinese Red Cross.

The earthquake struck Qinghai province in northwestern China. The number of dead is over 2 000, with over 10 000 people injured. Around 15 000 dwellings have been razed to the ground, and 100 000 people have been made homeless.

”I am deeply saddened that China has once again been hit by an earthquake. It is now crucial that the emergency relief reaches those affected. The Chinese Red Cross has considerable experience of dealing with natural disasters, and is assisting the Chinese authorities in the rescue efforts,” commented Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim.

Qinghai province borders Tibet, and much of it lies around 3 000 metres above sea level. The region is sparsely populated and the roads are poor. This means that it takes time for emergency teams and equipment to reach the affected areas.

”The Chinese Red Cross is providing its own search and rescue teams, health personnel and ambulances. It is also handing out blankets, tents and warm clothing,” Mr Solheim said.
