Norway is concerned about the tense situation that has arisen in Haiti following the announcement of the election results on 7 December.
“In the tense situation that has arisen following the elections, it is important that all parties now remain calm. Protests and demonstrations must be conducted in a peaceful manner,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
“I am concerned by the many allegations of irregularities. I urge all political actors to thoroughly investigate these claims in accordance with the Haitian election law and democratic procedures,” said the Foreign Minister.
Political stability is crucial to Haiti’s further development. Norway calls on all parties concerned to engage in dialogue with a view to resolving conflicts in a peaceful and democratic manner. For the reconstruction of the country following the earthquake, it is essential that the elections are carried out in a manner that is accepted by the Haitian people.
Norway is concerned by reports indicating that many health workers are not able to do the important job they have been tasked with.
We urge all parties to refrain from violence and not to hamper the work of the numerous health workers that are fighting the cholera epidemic. This is essential both for the handling of the epidemic and for the long-term development of the country,” said Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim.
Mr Solheim underscored that Norway stands by Haiti in the country’s reconstruction efforts and in its fight against cholera. Norway has pledged NOK 800 million in aid to Haiti over the next few years. Read more on Norway’s work in Haiti here:
