Egypt has an obligation under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to protect the premises of the Israeli Embassy.
“I trust that the Egyptian authorities are aware of this obligation and expect them to take the necessary steps to restore the embassy’s security,” said Mr Støre.
The Israeli Embassy in Cairo was attacked by protesters during the night. There are reports that several people have been killed and more than 1.000 injured in clashes between the protesters and the security forces. The Israeli Ambassador and most of the embassy staff left Egypt last night.
