“The increasing use of violence in the south of Israel and in Gaza is cause for serious concern, and I urge all parties to refrain from new acts of violence,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide.
“The increasing use of violence in the south of Israel and in Gaza is cause for serious concern, and I urge all parties to refrain from new acts of violence,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide.
Over the weekend, a large number of rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza. The Israeli air force has carried out a number of air strikes against Gaza. Several casualties have been reported.
“Israel is entitled to live within safe borders and to defend its territory and population. The rocket attacks against the south of Israel are completely unacceptable. At the same time, countermeasures must be proportional and must distinguish between combatants and civilians. Both parties must now prevent a further escalation and stop the spiral of violence so that no more lives are lost. These incidents are a terrible tragedy for those who have been hit. They also undermine the opportunities for reaching a lasting solution to the outstanding political issues between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Norway supports the Egyptian efforts to achieve a ceasefire,” said Mr Eide.
