The International Peace Research Institute (Prio) intends to address the Security Council Resolution 1325 on ‘Women, Peace and Security’ in a research project. The overall objective is to increase the understanding of women’s participation in peace processes. The project will combine research into the United Nations system, peace negotiations, and the empowerment of women. It will be a comparative exercise addressing the peace and reconciliation processes in the Sudan, Sri Lanka and Sierra Leone. The Resolution will guide the project both thematically and methodologically, but the project will also analyse whether conditions in the respective countries can help to explain the outcome of the processes. More specifically, the study is tasked to accomplish the following: (1) analyse to what extent women and their needs and interests have been involved in the three peace processes; (2) evaluate whether Resolution 1325 has had any impact on the ongoing processes; (3) explore whether the Resolution has made more women assume high-ranking positions at the UN.
