"I wish Jotun all the best of luck and look forward to coming back here for the opening of the new factory", Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide said in his greetings to the new Multi Color Centre.
The Minister based his words on the following points:
- It is a great pleasure for me to be present here at the opening of Jotun’s Multicolor Centre in Yangon. – As far as I know, the first establishment of a Norwegian company since the reforms and opening up of the country started.
- Norway is a strong supporter of the ongoing changes in this country and the push towards economic reforms and poverty reduction: The need to improve the lives of the ordinary citizens – and how important the creation of new jobs is in this regard.
- When Norway lifted the sanctions against Myanmar early this year, we were very clear in regard to what Norwegian authorities expect from Norwegian companies who aim to do business with or invest in Myanmar.
- Economic activities require an ethical foundation that puts people, the environment and broader social considerations on center stage.
- Value creation in trade and industry contributes to economic growth and development in society. Norway wants businesses that behave responsibly and develop products and services that can help to meet social and environmental challenges. The Norwegian Government expects all Norwegian companies comply with guidelines on corporate social responsibility.
- Jotun is a truly international company. It has a presence in more than 80 countries and came to Asia, to Thailand, over 40 years ago. Jotun is today one of the major global paint suppliers. The intention of the company is to contribute to the development of Myanmar by giving work opportunities and training to local people. The ambition is to build a factory and transfer technology so high quality products can be produced locally. I wish Jotun all the best of luck and look forward to coming back here for the opening of the new factory.
