The first Global Inter-Media Dialogue (GIMD) was held in Bali on 1–2 September 2006, and arose from the human rights dialogue between Indonesia and Norway. The cartoon controversy that began in the autumn of 2005 formed the backdrop for this conference. The second GIMD took place in Oslo on 4–5 June 2007, and the third was again held in Bali, on 7–8 May 2008.
The GIMD focuses on freedom of expression and the responsibilities of the media in a globalised world. The aim is to foster tolerance and understanding across cultural and religious divides. It is also envisaged that the GIMD will help to expand the network of media actors from different countries and cultures.
