Compulsory Arbitration in the dispute between the Finance Sector Union of Norway and the Norwegian Employers' Association for the Financial Sector
The Norwegian Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion, Mr. Bjarne Håkon Hanssen today has notified the parties in the labour conflict in the finance sector that the Government will put forward a bill proposing the conflict to be resolved by compulsory arbitration. – I urged the parties not to implement the impending escalation, and to resume their work as soon as possible, Mr. Hanssen says. The conflict has lasted since 1. June.
- The decisive factors for the Government are the reports from institutions like the Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway, Norges Bank (the National Bank of Norway), and the National Insurance Authorities, all indicating that an escalation quickly would lead to large and serious social problems. The conflict would almost immediately paralyse so many vital functions in society that the authorities had to intervene. After an overall consideration, I do not think it is justifiable to let the alerted chaos occur, states the Minister.
After considering the consequences compared with the obvious deadlock between the parties, the government will, at an extraordinary Council of State tomorrow, put forward a bill referring the dispute to compulsory arbitration.
