Presenting the Norwegian petroleum model in Mexico

Minister of Petroleum and Energy Ola Borten Moe presented the Norwegian model for managing petroleum resources at a seminar in Mexico on May 8th. Close to 200 representatives from public agencies, the national oil company Pemex and the business sector attended to learn about the Norwegian regulatory framework and how the Norwegian authorities operate in the petroleum sector.

“Mexicans are genuinely interested in how Norway manages its petroleum resources. They want to improve the efficiency of their own system, and make changes to stimulate innovation and technological development. I hope that the Norwegian model is helpful to them in their energy reform efforts,” says Minister of Petroleum and Energy Ola Borten Moe.

The seminar was arranged at the request of the Mexican authorities, who wished to learn more about Norway’s experiences and the development of the Norwegian petroleum system. Mexico is currently reforming its petroleum policy. At present, only the national oil company Pemex is licensed to operate on the Mexican continental shelf.

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate and Statoil were also represented at the seminar. While the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate described its role in the Norwegian system, Statoil presented its history, from state ownership to stock-exchange listing.

Minister of Petroleum and Energy Ola Borten Moe also held separate meetings with Foreign Affairs Secretary José Antonio Meade Kuribreña, Energy Minister Pedro Joaquin Coldwell and Pemex CEO Emilio Lozoya.

The visit to Mexico concluded with a trip into the jungle to see the Mayan archaeological site Calakmul, followed by a helicopter flight to the Gulf of Mexico to visit an oil platform and a floating production unit (FPSO) from the Norwegian company BW Offshore in the Cantarell field.
