The Norwegian Maritime Directorate and the Norwegian Ship Registers are to be merged. The purpose of the merger is to establish a cohesive maritime administration that is well equipped to fulfil society’s requirements for safety, the environment and service in the maritime industry.

Minister of Trade and Industry Trond Giske has decided that the Norwegian Maritime Directorate and the Norwegian Ship Registers are to be merged. The purpose of the merger is to establish a cohesive maritime administration that is well equipped to fulfil society’s requirements for safety, the environment and service in the maritime industry.

In merging the Norwegian Maritime Directorate and the Norwegian Ship Registers, national administration of the maritime sector will emerge as more unified, user-friendly and competitive.

“The merger will help to maintain Norway’s status as a leading maritime nation,” says Mr Giske.

The Minister of Trade and Industry emphasises that this is a merger, not a co-location.

“After the merger,” says Mr Giske, “the Norwegian Ship Registers will remain situated in Bergen, but as a unit within the new maritime administration. The Norwegian Ship Registers currently comprises a strong professional environment staffed with competent employees.”

The Ministry of Trade and Industry decided in June 2010 to appoint a working group to consider a merger of the Norwegian Maritime Directorate and the Norwegian Ship Registers. Headed by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the working group consisted of representatives from the Norwegian Maritime Directorate, the Norwegian Ship Registers, and relevant employee organisations. The working group submitted its status report on 1 November 2010 in accordance with its mandate.

The working group’s status report states that a merger would result in a more unified maritime administration while strengthening expertise-building, facilitating better understanding of tasks and result requirements, and simplifying communication between the agencies.

The merger will take effect from 1 January 2012.
