Norwegian candidate for UNEP
The Norwegian Government has presented former government minister Børge Brende to the post as executive director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The nomination was made in a letter today from Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Mr. Brende was Norway's minister of the environment 2001-2004 and minister of trade and industry 2004-2005. He is now a Member of Storting (parliament) for the Conservative Party.
In his letter Prime Minister Stoltenberg says Mr. Brende is eminently qualified to the post as head of UNEP. He refers to Mr. Brende's extensive international network in the fields of environment, industry and business, and that Mr. Brende in 2004 chaired the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD12).
